Three Durango Pertussis Cases
A four month old baby, a five year old child and one adult.have been diagnosed with pertussis, also known as whooping cough. All are Durango residents. There is a risk that other residents may have been exposed especially with so many holiday gatherings occurring this time of year.

San Juan Basin Health Department's Durango and Pagosa Springs offices will be closed on Thursday, December 25th and Friday, December 26th. The offices will also be closed on Thursday, January 1st for the New Year's Day holiday.
Public Presentation on Media Literacy
A public presentation entitled Raising Critical Thinkers: Media Literacy in our Home and Schools will take place on Thursday, December 11th at 6 p.m. at Escalante Middle School. The presentation will look at the effect of media advertising -- particularly alcohol and tobacco messages on our children -- and the effectiveness of analyzing those messages in terms of preventing unhealthy behaviors.

Nike gets tons of kids to “Just Do It.” Celebrate Great American SmokeoutOn November 20, people who smoke from across the country will put down their cigarettes for the Great American Smokeout. “About 85 percent of Colorado smokers have indicated that they want to quit. The Great American Smokeout is an ideal time for people who smoke to tackle the challenge,” said Caleb Gates, Tobacco Cessation Specialist for San Juan Basin Health. “On November 20, with the support of others, people have the opportunity to quit for the day, which can often lead to quitting for good.”
